sisters in wonderland

Today's the day we set aside to share our Alice in Wonderland inspired images. The invitation went out last week in conjunction with the Shoot Portobello photography project and today is the day they'll be shooting the Alice In Wonderland theme.

Since many of us couldn't make it to London (hey, Happy Birthday Xanthe!), we're having our own celebration of the magic and wonder of the classic fairy tale right here. To take a peek at what the participants of Shoot Portobello are capturing, their images will be posted in the Shoot Experience gallery.

Show us what you came up with today! Let's all get Mad (as in Hatter) with it!

Shoot for the Stars

-Shot with the Lensbaby Composer and the Super Wide Conversion Lens

I often consider myself an everyday photographer. Not so much because I shoot everyday (which I usually do) but more because I shoot my everyday life. I take pictures of everything from breakfast to bedtime and everything in between.

And I'm not fussy about it. I don't often move things around or arrange things for the camera. I break the rules of photography constantly. I crank up my ISO. I don't always look through the viewfinder. I cross my fingers. I blow out my whites. I don't use a tripod. I like grain. I don't like my flash. I shoot in really low light. I don't use my lens cap. But I have a really really good time.

If I worried about the rules or waited for the right time to shoot the optimum picture, I wouldn't have the rich (and imperfect) story of my life in photographs.

Let's see a little something sacred from your life's narrative. Something that maybe wasn't thought out, or planned and yet, it fell unexpectedly before you like a shooting star as you were there to catch the magic with your lens.

Memento

She was sitting with her family on a blanket towards the edge of the great lawn next to The Bean. The first thing I noticed about her was the pretty floral kerchief pulling her dark brown hair back from her face. The next thing I noticed was that she was nursing her child who was probably at least 2-and-a-half. I smiled at her when our eyes met, and the corners of her mouth turned upward just slightly, as if she were not sure that my smile was actually intended for her. I wanted to tell her that I had nursed mine until she was way past toddlerhood, and how much that relationship meant to both me and my daughter, but shyness prevented me from offering more than my smile and bashful looks of admiration. I quietly applauded her casual openness in nursing amongst thousands of people without any sign of self-consciousness or awkwardness or preemptive defiance aimed at anyone around her who might be judging her. If you had never seen a woman nursing an older toddler, and you saw her as I did that evening, you would think it was the most natural thing in the world, and a comfort to witness as well.

Later, when she stood up to play with her two small children, I saw that she was wearing a long flowy snow-white skirt that looked like a graceful billowy cloud floating above the grass. Again I admired her, for that is probably the last thing I would have worn were I the mother of two small children on a picnic, for I know too well my tendency to leave traces of my meal on whatever I happen to be wearing, not to mention Cadence's habit of using me as a napkin. Then I noticed her adorable dark blue denim sneakers peeking out from underneath her skirt, and I knew I just had to get a photo.

I'm about as nostaligic as they come, and this one photo is my memento of those warm feelings I had for a total stranger whom I observed and admired during the course of a free family concert on a lovely summer evening. It is also my unspoken blessing over her and her family for the simple joy and comfort I received in just being near their quiet contentment. This small token of a photo is the key to memories that I've already placed carefully and lovingly in the altar space of my heart.

Won't you share with us an image that conjures up a meaningful memory or that has a special story behind it?  I know I'm not the only nostalgic one around here...

sights and stories of South Dakota

Rapid City and the Black Hills of South Dakota teem with places to explore (and photograph!), both funky and inspiring. Where else can you visit one of the most ubiquitous symbols of America, see a life-size Apatosaurus towering above the town, and observe the most complete collection of live reptiles in the world, all in one day?

Growing up in such a fantastic place, I considered this scenery and these places to be just another part of the everyday background. As a child, however, one place I did not take for granted was Storybook Island. I know now that this children’s park covers eight acres and is fifty years old, a fact which makes me thankful for the vision of those who founded it and have kept it going all these decades. Back in my younger days, however, all I knew was that it was delightfully fun. Drawn from fairy tales and children’s stories, tiny houses built at odd angles and life-sized storybook characters cover the grounds – perfect for scampering through and playing make-believe. My sister and I could hear our voices echo in a giant pumpkin, cross the bridge to Noah’s Ark, walk into a whale’s belly, climb up the stairs to a castle’s fortress, and rustle through the leaves to Christopher Robin’s house. Recently, I went back with her and my small nephew to this magical place. He was brave enough to stick his head inside a giant lion’s mouth to try to sneak a sip from the same water fountain that she and I drank from over twenty years ago. What a fun thing to witness!

Having a nephew is also a good excuse to visit Old MacDonald’s Farm. Here, my inner child eagerly comes out to play, petting the calves and baby goats, marveling at the downy chicks, and grinning at the piglets in their pen. I hold my breath as the billy goats walk across the hanging bridge and giggle at the pullets running pell-mell across the grounds.

There are still places to explore here that I haven’t seen yet: an animal refuge, a kangaroo ranch, the annual buffalo round up, and the wild horse sanctuary. I need to visit Crazy Horse Memorial again, see the mammoth dig, visit the baby bears, work up my courage to shoot photos at the crazy Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and encourage my sister to pose for goofy photos with the statues of presidents that line downtown. I suspect I will be busy for a long time!

A special thanks to Kristina from Medowlark Days for sharing this amazing list of things to do and see (and the photos to go with it) in South Dakota for the Your Local Pix series. I had the chance of spending some time there many moons ago and she is not kidding; it's really amazing.

big life

Lately, with all the untimely deaths in the news, I've been feeling really aware of how fast everything goes by. It makes me sad. But it also makes me want to live boldly. To be brave and take more risks. To say the hard things, especially when it's to myself. To peacefully coexist with my imperfections, but also not become complacent about things I know I can change. Most of all, it makes me want to spend my time on what really matters the most. I found this a few days ago, and it's been with me ever since. It's by Dane Sanders, and it's called "Why Settle For A Little Life?" I hope you'll check it out, and please share with us today what inspires you to live a bigger life?
