Yesteryear

Oh my..... there's nothing lovelier than an old brick house with a wrought-iron fence along the front. Yes please! The lines, the depth, the texture....all blending together so perfectly. It's heart-stopping, for me.

This beautiful antique home belonged to Thomas Mayne Daly, the first mayor of the City of Brandon (in 1882). It's now the Daly House Museum. I've been admiring the new, yet oh so perfectly old-looking wrought-iron fence, all summer long. Finally, tonight, I photographed it.... I'm so glad I did. Sometimes you just gotta stop and take the time.... it's totally worth it!

Today share something that stopped you in your tracks, pulled you over, made you turn around, go back and CLICK..... We'd love to see it too.

when the road calls

Summer is my time. Weeks before the first day of summer and all I can think about are bright-colored cotton sundresses that hang in my closet, happy clumps of daisies that wait to pop up yellow and white in my garden and the cool, turquoise waters of the neighborhood swimming pool. I dream about snow cones, drive-in movies and road trips like other people dream about fancy new cars and luxury vacations. I can't help myself.
.
But I think maybe what I love most about summer are the road trips. Summer is road trip season. June rolls around and the road calls out. At my house, we are only too happy to heed the call, to pack the car up and go. We build time into our trip so we can stop along the way-- wherever, whenever we feel the pull. These summer adventures with my family are my favorite, my happiest times. These are the memories I hold close.
.
Today, share with us your favorite shots from the road. And don't forget to tag your shots #ssmoment all July long, and join Shutter Sisters as we play along with Haagen-Dazs and their 50 Summer Moments project (tag #hdmoment).

Accidental Tourist

As photographers we often find ourselves looking through our lenses like tourists, seeing the world around us with fresh eyes, documenting everything that’s new. Even what we’re familiar with can be captured through a new perspective, a different angle, a renewed way of discovering it.

And when we are actually tourists—experiencing something for the first time to us—it can also seem like we are children again; bright-eyed, curious, excited about new sights and sounds, people and landscapes.

There is nothing better than taking in all the wonder of our surroundings. Of seeing things from a different perspective. Exploring either the new or the old through a lens that appreciates it all. And having the tools to take what we see and create something brand new with it. To tell the stories that beg to be told. A moment in time that somehow, no one else has seen.  An angle that surprises even us and offers a whole new way of thinking. A landscape that feels as foreign as the moon and yet somehow as familiar as our own backyard. A person, who seemingly comes out of nowhere begging to be noticed, recognized, seen, recorded.

I am here. Can you see me? Do you know what I stand for?  the monument pleads.

I am here. Can you see me? Will you help me to tell my story? the man begs of me through his gesture (a peace sign).

I am reminded time and again of what an incredibly important job we have. It is through our eyes, through our lenses that stories—of us and of the world—are told.

Do show us today what stories you been asked to tell.

story of place

I live where the sea shapes the landscape. Place is easily identified by weathered clapboard shingles, stacks of lobster traps, and croppings of tangled wild sea roses. Wild and weathered, the stories of long harsh winters and achingly beautiful autumns. A place where tradition and nature are closely intertwined.

Today show us a story of place with one of your images.

Are you surorunded by wide open spaces, or perhaps concrete urban landscapes?

What speaks "home" to you?
