Superhero Photo Challenge: out the window

032908_600.jpg

One of the greatest pleasures in life is the window seat on an airplane. Are you with me sisters? My husband and I have to do some serious rock, paper, scissors every time we get situated.

I always have my camera at the ready and feel a childlike giddiness when I see the world from this perspective. I am suddenly an astronaut seeing the planet for the first time: it's rich topography amazing me with its color, clouds and organic forms. It takes my breath away every time.

This week's theme is to shoot out the window. It could be an airplane, a car or even your bathroom window. As usual, leave your link in the comments and add the tag "superhero photo challenge" to your flickr page.

Hot tip: If you don't already know this, treat your airplane photos with levels or curves in photoshop (auto levels usually does the trick) and watch the landscape pop!

My favorite out the window shots are out my office window. I'm amazed at the pictures I can get. I love my office window! This post, the last two photos are taken right from my desk, out the office window.

I took both of these looking out my office window. I so often find my mind wandering..instead of doing the work at hand.

I often take photo's through the car window when I'm not the one driving. This one is from a few days ago:

I took this in December. I was close to getting into a big fat fight with my 6 year old because we made this deal at the beginning of the trip that I'd get the window seat on the second leg and she changed her mind. Boy was I pissed. It took a few minutes for the adult in me to kick in and let it slide. She ended up "loaning" me the window seat for a few minutes just before sunset.

No flights coming up, but I'm looking forward to trying the car window for a while.

I've never gotten to fly, so all my "out the window" shots are either from the car or my upstairs bedroom (of sunsets, not of, you know, the spying on people variety).

What a great shot! I don't fly much so I hardly ever get that kind of bird's eye view of the world. I actually shot this one very soon after "going digital."

I think the picture of me would have been better: Envision a woman in her car in the driveway, with the tripod threaded through the steering wheel, taking pictures of the neighbor's house through the drops on the windshield. *shakes head*

Had a camera, a good book, and a sleeping baby in the back of the car. I didn't mind at all that I missed lunch with the rest of them. An hour later, they appeared in my sideview mirror.

I can't offer you a picture for this category, yet, nor am I sure that as a male of the species it would be accepted, (wink), but I would like to offer you a short story based on the theme.

Many years back I was going from the UK to Boston, Mass. I was gazing, dumbstruck, out of the window of the plane at the amazing multi-coloured tapestry below and wondering just where on the planet this was. The captain came over the intercom with a flight update and said that we were flying over Labrador. Noted, and remembered for all time.

Ten years ago, via a long winded sub-story, we "happened" to be on holiday in Newfoundland and the opportunity to explore that "mystery land" just had to be taken. One float plane and nights in a lodge on a lake duly booked.

There is an amazing fact I discovered about Labrador which is due to the abundance of mosses which cover it. If you were to take photographs of it from 30,000 feet, 3,000 feet, 300 feet, and (in certain places) 3 feet there would be a very good chance that one could crop a section of each shot and end up with pictures that display a virually identical tapestry of colours. No matter how high you are above the ground, it always looks the same when you look down on it!

If only I actually had the pictures to prove it. :-( Possible project ?

p.s. Great site girls.
