"mistakes"

070808_600.jpg

Do you ever feel like your images are not the ones you'd envisioned? For me, they're usually better or worse. And it makes me think about the idea of expectation. We can plan out our lives and photographs, but things never play out exactly the way we think they will. I don't delete the planned photographs more than the lucky mistakes. But if they don't "turn out", there seems to be more dissapointment associated. When you step in to arrange things, you're more attached to the results. But lately, I like the "mistakes" most. They're like little glimpses of the parts I didn't know, or didn't see. And that's more exciting than what I was expecting. Do you have any lucky mistakes to share? We'd love to see them!

My very first newborn shoot. I was having a hard time getting Momma to relax and just go about like normal. Needed her to just cuddle him, rock him, do her thing. After a quick nappy change she was heading back to the room to get some more pictures... Kept snapping away and didn't realise until I got home that I had this little treasure.

Funny you should post this today. This morning I downloaded some photos I took yesterday, and I honestly can't remember snapping this one at all. I may have accidently hit the shutter button while changing my settings, but I like it!

This was a total accident. My boys were sitting together (which NEVER happens) & I went to take a photo & this happened:

i opened this one and thought - eh, unremarkable. i added a vintage touch to it while playing around and suddenly it became a different image. i like surprises like that.

I JUST posted this the other day. The little boy moved his hands at the last minute and I thought "oh darn, he moved!" but i loved the moment it captured.

My little niece was playing on her swing set, and I told her to give me a big smile. Instead of a pretty smile, she kind of did a forced grin/grimace, which always makes me laugh when I look back on it.

All of my images feel like mistakes. This is a sunflower not yet blossomed. Who'd of thunk???

this happens to me a lot!! Good ones and bad ones.

This one is a good example of one that I didn't like at first, but once I posted it against the black background I loved the effect.

This picture was a total accident! I just happened to have my finger on the shutter button while resting on the hammock outside, when my younger son tried to jump in with me. The force of him jumping into the hammock was just enough to make my finger press down on the shutter . . . and this is what I got!

This is one of my favorite photos of my son and he's barely even in the frame:

Shooting INTO the light used to be a mistake but, now I do it all-the-time!

Trying to capture the immensity of a boulder; ended up liking the way the lines in the sky mirrored the grooves in the boulder more:

I had this blog entry envisioned in my head but had NO idea of how these pictures would turn out. I was pleased.

I don't know if you could call taking hundreds of pictures and hoping at least one of them turns out a "process" but so far that's all I now how to do! Here's one I took yesterday.

I've shared this one a few times already, but it's my favorite accident of all time! Couldn't repeat it if I tried...

I saw these two playing together and had a different shot in mind (like one with both of them in focus!), but the moment I took this I knew it would be a favorite. Funny how that happens so often!

My first picture taken, ever, on my Nikon D60, my first SLR.

I said "Smile" to my 2 and 6-year-old girls and here is what I got...

Here are 2 of my recent favorite mistakes.

Now this is an invitation that's right up my alley! I find myself (more often than not) finding the good out of my "bad" shots!

This one was taken after I'd been "tweaking" some settings on my camera. I was struck by the way her face was so crisp, yet the wisps of her hair were blurred - almost angelic.

And this one, I just love how candid it is...the look of satisfaction on my little guy's face is a perfect complement to Dad's discomfort.

I just took this photo at a photo shoot of a little boy I did last week. He was all over the place but I just sat there in the middle of his little acrobat show and just shot away. It kinda' works!

I just got a Nikon D80 for my b'day in May. I can't get the lighting right but this ended up being one of my favorite pictures. This my son's best friend after an hour of sprinkler play.

This is one of my favorite "mistakes". I was trying to capture a picture of a deer in my backyard. I cut off part of the deer, but as I zoomed in to look at the picture, I was so surprised with what I caught in the reflecting ball:

I was on a wedding shoot earlier this year, photographing the bride getting ready. The bridesmaids were having a little trouble getting the dress on, and I was having a little trouble getting any shots with faces that weren't grimacing ;). I clicked, and at the same time one of the bridesmaids yelled "Go get the crochet hook!" I love this picture :).

I was shooting as my niece practiced her gymnastics routine. When I went through the images, I found this one - that's my pouty 4yr old on the right! I burst out laughing - I didn't even notice he was there when I was taking pics! :)

I took this one when he was sick, I was trying to cheer him up by rolling around on the floor.

This I took with my phone, and I did not intend to get the table but I like it.
