winter wonderland

I am embracing the snow in Omaha (although I haven't been the one shoveling our driveway). No one was prepared for the extreme winter conditions we are experiencing right now. And it is making life a little difficult due to longer commutes, dangerous temperatures, and school closings. But I happen to think it's quite beautiful, and if the temperature outside wasn't 1 degree I would be out there taking pictures all day. Not only because of the beauty of it all, but so that I can look back in 10 years and say "remember that year that we got 28 inches of snow in the month of December?". "Remember when there were snow drifts in our neighborhood that were 10 feet tall?" I have proof. And isn't that what photography is all about? Capturing a moment or memory so that we can have proof that it happened?
What proof of winter do you have in your neck of the woods?

In Maine we seem to have constant proof that winter exists.

They have a white Christmas every 15 years on average and I was lucky enough to experience one this past year. It was magical!

i do remember when snow was magical as a child for me. now it's a hassle -- especially when you do a 180 in a four-lane highway on the way to work like i did thursday... yikes! we've been hit hard with snow in the midwest so far this year.
but i'm trying to get that magical feeling about snow again. trying to take pictures when i can. it may not be fun to look at, but it's wonderful to look at.
here is what winter looked like at sunset on new year's eve last weekend.

I had fun walking around shooting the day after we got 16 inches of snow the week before Christmas. I think it was the most we've ever had in December.

I paid a visit to the Capitol lawn a day or so later and loved the snowmen. :)

From what I hear it totally went southeast to Florida. Could you send some back this way?
But then I can capture the beauty and say it isnt so bad.
