differences

"When people aren't pitted against each other, when they are not even mildly competing, when people aren't vying for position (because all positions in this circle are equally important), they jump out of themselves and into their humanity. They fall so in love with each other they think they wrote each other's pieces. They're proud of each other and they root for each other. They cry for each other and they feel for each other. When people feel safe, they recognize themselves in others, and instead of being threatened by their differences, they are moved by them. When they are safe, they are moved by their own differences." - Nancy Slonim Aronie, Writing from the Heart

What a great quote.
Pretty much a non-traditional portrait, but captures the moodiness of a new kindergartner perfectly: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ko2008/4982695520/

What an amazing quote! Thank you for helping me to reflect on important things in the morning. I love this site... And while I'm at it, I might add that I absolutely ADORE the new book! It has helped me get some great shots, already! I had pre-ordered it months ago when it was first announced and it seemed like forever before it arrived, but it was so worth it!

Thank you for all that you do. :)

This is a beautiful quote to read at the anniversary of 9/11...today I am feeling safe and the differences I see in myself are those of aging...not always accepted in some circles and embraced in others. I also see a survivor...missing those who have gone before me.

Beautiful post. Because of something I have been dealing with the past several months, this quote reminded me of friends being supportive of each other and not letting jealousy come between their friendship.

As always, I find the timing of what is posted here perfectly suited to what's going on in my world.

I'm trying to love my neighbourhood, which one could call 'different':

I tend to see the world a little differently than everyone else... I think it's because I'm always dreaming of my future, the past, somewhere in between.

This quote is lovely but also timely for me on a personal level. For the first time I had a big difference with a mama friend. My tot was being grabby and her tot injured mine three times in one day (knocked him flat on his back on the hard ground, gave him a bloody lip, and bit his hand). I'm struggling to remember how much I love her little girl and be objective enough that we can all learn from the situation. Wishing I knew how to always make our kids feel safe to share.

So, so true. I've always been a "different" person, ever since I was a kid, but now I'm proud of my quirky sense of humor, loud horse laugh, big nose and naturally strawberry-blonde hair. :)

I took this at my daughter's volleyball game yesterday (she's #8). At school, she is often in the minority, and I am happy that she is comfortable in all social circles. At the 7th grade level, they play volleyball for fun. They are learning and there's no pressure. I love to see both teams "shake hands" and say "good game" at the end.
