close to home

Snow days, long nights, howling winds, and chill factor can only mean one thing: winter is not loosening it's grip. Not quite yet anyway.

*sigh*

For some that means being cooped up indoors far more often than is comfortable. We can sum it up with two little words: cabin fever.

Today, turn it around by looking at your humble and cozy abode with fresh eyes. Share the corners of your world that remind you how lucky you are to spend your time close to home.

Cabin fever always puts me in a mood to clean out those dark dusty corners and finish the laundry. Weird.

I had a moment of serendipity the other day when I was testing new camera apps on my cellphone, and one of the resulting images showed my living room as the cozy book nook it is - I spend much time curled up on the couch with a book during winter:

this is so crazy! just yesterday i was straightening up my home for a friend's visit and as i was doing it i was falling in love with my home all over again. ever since the holidays, with the business of making rings on the weekends and long days at work, i honestly haven't paid much attention to the tidiness of my home. I was loving the way my home looked, proud to show it off so i took some photos around the house for myself. This morning I woke up and decided to go around the house and take closer photos of things dear to my heart and was in the process of uploading and working on a post for my autumnsun blog... then I came here. crazy. so i haven't posted yet but here is one to share.

This morning I wanted to go for a walk. The sun was shining bright, it looked so pretty. I took my camera and left the house. Uuhh! It was freezing cold. I couldn´t even decide to get the camera out from underneath my coat. I tried.
But I gave up, turned around went home again. ... and started to clean the house. Well - now I feel cosy at home, at least.
I took these picture today, feeling nice and warm (right next to the radiator in my kitchen)

I love this cozy little photo of home. Especially since I am so "at home" on the computer lately. Perfect for cabin fever weather (which actually has it's redeeming moments). Then again, what do I know. I live in Jamaica.
Here is a quick pic of my couch, and my views from office and kitchen:

Yes, today I stayed close to home, but I'm still reminded of the snow http://www.flickr.com/photos/maggie_gem/5401361865/

Bring on the spring!

Living in a college apartment doesn't always have that 'home' feeling. This picture is of my roommate and her cat. When I've had a rough day one of these two is always there to make me feel better. In a home away from home, this is comfort.

We don't get snowed in - Hawaii :D But, I've been down with a bad cold, house bound. Here's a peek at our slow Saturday (from yesterday a.m.)

You were reading my mind! Since we moved to the top of the world, literally, I have been finding many cozy cabin activities to keep me from becoming cabin fever crazy. Cooking is fitting the bill. =]

This is "my spot." It's where I read, talk on the phone, play online, watch TV and rub the puppygirl's belly with my feet.

I love the wall in my bedroom. There I have some memories and pictures, which I like. And on my dresser are memorabilia from distant countries.

This shot (and many on my blog) are taken right from my deck, or porch. There is something relaxing about going outside for some fresh air with my camera for just a moment. When all is quiet with the kids, I upload my few little shots and take a minute to play with texture, layers and blending modes. It's kept my sanity for sure and has helped me to find beauty during the season.

Needing a little color and sweetness in winter, I invented my own holiday...

(I feel like words have usurped much of my creative energy right now. The photos are mostly snapshot illustrations. But I know if I just keep posting photos to my blog, the urge for something more visually beautiful eventually sneaks up and pounces on me.)

I needed this reminder. Having recently started working full time I have found no time to shoot the things I have loved to shoot in the past. Along with the rainy weather of the PNW and 2 primary school age children I have just been "too busy" to find time to do much photography (or anything else for myself). But a reminder that there are many beautiful things in my home to occupy my creative need is just what I need to shift me back into finding time to do the things I enjoy!
