Life in Black and White

Rain earlier in the week made way for a beautiful, warm Southern California weekend for a volunteer beach cleanup that my husband, son and myself participated in.  Well, actually, I just followed along with my camera, but atleast I was there!  The sun was high and bright in a gorgeous blue sky but when I saw this picture I knew it would tell the story so much better in black and white.  With no color to distract,  it was just my husband and son walking side-by-side as if they were the only two on that beach.

Today, show us your black and white photos and let them tell us their stories.

This one reminded me of a shot I took of my dad and my son walking up in the woods where my dad was born to visit the old home place. Here he is telling my son one of his many childhood stories.

Sometimes it's the sweet melancholy moments that call for black and white:

And sometimes it's the happy rambunctious moments that do:

I added some more of my photos from my yosemite camping trip last weekend, in black & white.

I need to experiment more with black and white images - seeing what impact I can create without color. Here are two images from recent photo walks:

I believe I already posted this, but today's discussion thread made me think about it more. For me, the story and the photos are always woven together. Removing the color made some shapshot images flow into the color and theme of the blog entry much better. Fewer distractions.

I agree, some photos just call out to be in B&W. Chris, yours is perfect in B&W - the message is stronger that way.

In my blog post yesterday, the third shot is B&W. The capture is all about form and light. B&W was the answer to emphasize these elements.

Here's one I shot from my light rail ride to work last week. I just had the feeling that it had to be black and white so you could really focus on the grafitti's message.

I recently shot some black and white images when I was preparing for a show a couple of weeks ago. Black and white definitely gives things a different feel.

Love the image you captured above.

i love black and white so much so, that i had to start a new blog dedicated to just that....2 blogs are hard enough to keep up with and adding a third was slightly insane of me...but sometimes a girl just has to do what a girl has to do :)

For some reason, I thought I'd take a few thanksgiving shots in black and white, and I like the way they turned out:

I love black and white photography, but I don't do too many, weird. But here are a few:

My storie is simple, when we visit the grandparents in italy, the grandpa, the daddy and the boys always go for a walk in the early morning through the fields and woods. In the end they always meet Lucia at her house and grab a coffee or some gumbears.
This year I tried to capture that routine in black and white, because b/w somehow fit to that idea of generations:

so true that at times the absence of color makes other things come alive in the photo .....

It's more sepia than B&W, but October moons are so enchanting . . .

This image was actually taken several weeks ago in response to a "shoes" photo challenge. They had all just finished riding, untacked, put away their horses & were visiting (one is my daughter). They thought I was crazy when I asked them to line up & I nearly laid on the ground to get the shot. After I turned it into a black & white image it has become a favorite of everyone.

Hardworking paddock boots - these girls/young women aren't afraid to get dirty.

I am in love with this photo! My favorite type of photography is when somebody is walking around with their camera and just snaps a picture of people doing an everyday thing. I also adore black and white photography because it gives the photograph a unique quality. It makes everything seem more mystical.
