safety nets

Taking risks is not easy for everyone. Who am I kidding? Taking risks is not really easy for anyone. Because taking risks usually means doing something that makes us feel unsure, uncomfortable, unsafe, or uneasy. And that is hard.  Yet, people  take risks every day. Some big and some small. But, no matter the size, or the significance (or even insignificance) of the risk, what does matter is that we stepped out of comfort zone for a while. We pushed ourselves, put ourselves out there, leaped, took the plunge, dove in.

One of the best part of a community like this one here at Shutter Sisters is that in each other, we have a support system, a cheering section, a life ring. It doesn't always make taking risks less scary but knowing that there is a safety net of sisters here for you can really help remind us that we're all in this together.

Are there risks you've taken that you'd like to share? How about risks you want to take but are afraid to? The more we share our fears, the less power they have over us. Remember, you are not alone. We're here for each other.

I've just recently started teaching - which is way out and beyond my comfort zone. A risk well-worth taking:

I've recently moved to South Italy.
I'm working hard to start a new life. Sometimes I feel alone.
Nature encourage me to go on.

The biggest risk I've taken this last year by far has been to put myself out there in the blogosphere and share my personal journey with others. After a lifetime of food and body image issues I decided to write about my struggles and triumphs and my way towards self love through my self portraiture. The fear I feel in sharing so much of myself makes me feel incredibly vulnerable, however I want other women who struggle like I have to know they are not alone. http://www.beyoutifulreflections.com/

It's not really what you would call a risk, but it will push me out of my comfort zone...I just ordered a Polaroid camera! With my DSLR I can take hundreds of pictures of snow on a branch, but with a Polaroid I'm going to have to slow down & be very mindful with each picture. It's a little scary, but I think it's going to be fun too. I can't wait to get the camera & see what develops (literally).

Not long before my first and only child was born, my husband's job required we relocate 3000 miles away. I started a blog to keep in touch with friends and for self-comfort. Four years later we're back home and I'm still blogging, but I feel my heart shifting. I recently revamped the blog so that it is like a compass needle pointing at my life's purpose. Scary. But exciting.

My five year old took a risk on Friday when she performed a magic show for her class. Watching one of my daughters take a risk is really harder than taking one myself. Who would have thought!!
I wrote about it here: http://www.babybythesea.net/2012/11/weekending-octobers-ending.html

A couple of weeks ago I joined my daughter and a group of 13 year old girls on a ropes course and what you say above is so true...that we are not alone.....that together we can face our fears. Watching the girls maneuver through all of the challenges at this course, confirmed it for me. I was taken aback by their courage. Amazing. http://www.momswhoclick.com/2012/11/face-your-fears-wordless-wednesday.html
