projecting memories

 021108_600.jpg

My dad would lift me under the armpits, hoist me above his head so I could scramble onto the canal platform high above the deck of our boat. Then the same for my older brother. We’d find the gigantic wooden lever and push like vikings aboard a rowing ship, both of us, until it gave way to open the gates.

We’d watch as water burst through in streams, pressing against the expanding crack, filling the throughway. Mom and dad’s smiling faces rose above the wall and past our feet as the boat emerged from the crevice and we’d climb on board again. We meandered through northern England and Scotland this way, Easter break explorers.

Gliding under arched stone bridges hundreds of years old, so low we had to press ourselves to the deck to clear the underside of mossy rock. Along waterways lined with tall grasses and walking paths, generations of feet pressing the earth into a smooth, winding line for docking and towing and the stretching of legs. It was a rosy-cheeked adventure within an adventure, frosty mornings spent wrapped in fishermens’ knits and puffy jackets. British camping, it was, pastoral and gentle.

For a four-year-old with a mop, swabbing the decks is as close to heaven as you can get—second only, perhaps, to single-handedly operating a canal.

I say I’ll never forget that year we lived on a busy street in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Not cohesive remembering, but … well, like snapshots. But how much of that is me, and how much has been imprinted on my brain in the dark with a projection screen?

I adore slides. My mom and dad took thousands of of them, kept to this day in stacks of catalogued metal boxes at their house. Australia 1969. July-August 1979. Bedford 1987-88. Every few months we'd beg them to fill the Kodak carousel, unroll the soft, white screen, take us through another episode of our collective history.

Digital photography is all about blogs, flickr, unlimited gluttony. In a good way, but still—compared to the economy necessitated by film, does the digital medium dilute photography's magic with sheer volume? Can files on a laptop ever immerse our kids in vividness, saturate them with memory in the gloriously tactile way of slides and albums?

There’s nothing like a loaded carousel to tranform photographs into an occasion. For me, a pile of sharpie-marked CDs simply cannot compete.

What do you do to make the most of your family photography in the digital age? How will you keep your own adventures alive the way our parents used to, with dinner on fold-up TV tables in the cosy, flickering dark?

+++++

The low-res scan of this slide (and of those on flickr) doesn't whatsoever do it justice. Apologies. All the photos are courtesy of my mom, who tells me she took them with an SLR in her hands for the first time. The drippy nose is courtesy of yours truly.

Down to Business

020908_600.jpg
This week has been the week of TO DO. Last week I finished a 2 month freelance graphic design job so this week I have been home. I am trying to get things done related to the new photography business while I have the chance. I do feel like I am making some progress because I have been crossing things off the list but there are also a lot of things that seem to hinge on other things. Does that ever happen to you? Where you find out that in order to do one thing you need to do 7 other things first. For instance, I’d like to start shooting in RAW, or at least try it out. But to do that, I want to get Adobe Lightroom first. But to get Lightroom, I need to get more memory for my eMac. Do I really want to spend $150 on more memory for my 5 year old eMac? I’m still deciding.

I also spoke to a nice guy with the state about starting a small business here and what I need to do to get things going. He sent me all of the appropriate links and forms to fill out. But as I started reading through the tax info I got confused. So I moved on to another task that seemed simple - applying for a trade name. In order to legally do business with a name other than your own, you need to file paperwork for a trade name. A few months back when I was deciding on a name, I searched the state’s online database of names to see if Spark Photo was available and it looked like it was. So yesterday I e-mailed a woman to make sure it was open before I sent in my check and paperwork. She wrote back and said that it was NOT available!!!! There is a photographer in my state with the last name of Sparks and he uses it in the name of his business. I had completely missed it before because the ‘s’ on the end of Sparks sent the name to the next page of alphabetical listings. It was a total oversight on my part and I was devastated. I designed a logo! I loved the name! OMG! I was back to square one on a name. It took me a couple of hours to get over that one, but I don’t have time to waste. So I think I’ve decided to go with Paige B. Photography. I kind of like the sound of it and the way that it kind of rhymes. I do like my first name (thanks mom and dad!), so I figure that using it in my business name makes sense. What do you guys think?

Here are some other things on my to do list for the next month or so:
-Buy some actions. I really like these.
-Develop pricing
-Create the necessary forms (contract, model release)
-Design a new logo (wasn’t expecting that one!)
-Create some marketing materials (business cards, postcards)

Here are some things on my wish list:
-New lens (still looking into which one)
-Camera bag (maybe this one or this one)
-CS3 (Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator- I currently have CS)
-Adobe Lightroom
-Blu Domain Website
-New Mac (ha! a girl can dream)

So, to recap – I have a lot to do. And here’s what I’d love to hear from you.
-What do you think of Paige B. Photography? Any other ideas you like better?
-What is on your photography related To Do list lately?
-What is on your photography related Wish List?

The Dance

020808_600.jpg

For quite some time I had been admiring the rich dimension of photographs bejeweled with texture. Not knowing at all how the technique was achieved, I sat in wonder, content that the question ‘how on earth do they do that?’ was just adding to their mysterious charm. Plus, I know how these things go with me and another all-consuming obsession was nothing I needed. But then, alas, the invitation came to join this lovely Flickr group and the rest is slowly becoming history. I am hopelessly hooked and although my inexperience and genuine don’t-know-how could have continued to keep me at arms length, this texture thing is far too alluring for me to resist.

Diving in blindly with one of Melissa’s free textures, I experiment and test and I enjoy the process of discovering what I can do. I begin to figure it out, make sense of it (layers and opacities, contrast and fill light) and as I start a slow and steady waltz I find myself tripping over my own feet, getting tangled in the steps I haven’t learned yet. I am reminded then of what I can’t do--the frustration sets in, I get distracted and I stumble.

My entire journey with photography has been as such. I walk and explore and discover. I get caught up in the music; add a shuffle, a twist, a spin. But it never fails, no matter how fluid the dance may seem, eventually I collide with a wall of my limitations. Although I continue to pick myself up and forge ahead, my technical confines continue to trip me up. Learning new moves takes…well…learning. But like Sarah, I don’t do well with manuals or dry how-tos. I need to get involved, feel the rhythm for myself, and test things out on my own in order to be willingly pushed into the fancy foot work of technical accomplishment.

I know I am not alone. I can hear the collective feminine voice agreeing, “yes, yes, me too”. So, I would like to hear from all of you on the subject. What is it that helps you learn and grow in your photographic endeavors? What inspires you to bust through the technical walls? What approach do you take? And how can we do more of it here at Shutter Sisters?

Come on, let’s dance.
