certain

There are so many ways that one can fall into the perfection trap around the holidays. In the past, I've built Thanksgiving up to be an unattainable figment of perfection. Rarely hosting, for fear that I wouldn't have the right ladle, or butter knife. The performance anxiety was just not worth it. But as I get older, those things matter less. I'd like to say that if you're the kind of person who judges me by my utensils, then I'm sure we're not compatible. Especially, since it's only been recently that I've stopped feeding my children out of boxes. It also goes deeper than that. The world lately, has been filled with so much uncertainty. There are businesses closing down, and asking for bail outs, everywhere. These are concerning times. But they're also a blessing because it nudges us to find, and focus on the things (which are usually not things) that we ARE certain about.

What are you certain about today?

I just posted, yesterday, about a tree in my backyard that's about 140 years old. I'm pretty certain that I wish it could talk. Although it has stood in the same place for all these 140 years, the area around it has gone through immense changes... and that's another thing I'm certain about.. change. When I can't count on ANYTHING else to go right, change is always there to plod along reliably.

Such a great message today!
Let's see... I'm certain that although it may AFFECT me, it's really not ABOUT me. In other words, it is what it is:

While I certainly won't judge you by your ladle, or any other kitchen utensils, I can relate! I'm a terrible cook and we recently had an office Thanksgiving potluck. I made some of the desserts, but everyone was so full from lunch, no one event made it that far!

I think some of the best moments come from improvising. While most of us would panic without the proper dinnerware, it's fun to try to figure out a fix and laugh about it the following year.

"I'd like to say that if you're the kind of person who judges me by my utensils, then I'm sure we're not compatible."

I want to put this quote on my refrigerator. This is such a great reminder at this time of year, where trying to perfectly reenact traditions is such pressure!

I am certain that those who sit at the table with me could care less about the scratched serving pieces and are just as thankful for our friendship as I am. I am certain these yummy desserts will be enjoyed tomorrow...

I'm certain of my family. For my hubby and my two beautiful kids. We are going through hard times now but it doesn't matter because we have so much more as a family than any amount of money could buy!
Great post Maile!
