Superhero Photo Challenge: Weather

As I pored through the incredible photos on the Photojojo site, "2008's Most Amazing News Photos" I was moved, shocked and amazed by what I saw. There were several pages of stunning images, but when I got to this image of Obama, the camera geek in me was like, WHAT?! How did they capture the rain like that? Was it the light? Was it an incredibly fast shutter speed? A slow one? A flash and a slow one? I was mesmerized by that rain.

As the fates would have it, I had my own moment in the rain during a session yesterday with a couple of friends. I thought nothing of it until I saw the images last night and discovered that I had captured the rain too! As a non-technically minded photographer, this is just happy magic to me. I would love to hear from you more techie folks out there if you have any tips on capturing the weather.

That's our challenge for the week everyone. Let's lean into the weather we are having and capture its icy, snowy, rainy, slushy glory.

Winter weather is what makes winter tolerable! I love ice storms , and often when they are predicted I go out to scout pics I want to take if and when the weather turns icy! The pics are from an ice storm last year.

both margie and I have captured some great wintery shots lately, mostly while driving. yesterday's photo on the blog is fantastic, I can say that because it was taken by my "shutter mister" as we like to call my husband! Just before christmas I did a photo essay of transport trucks in the snow while driving to Toronto.

We keep waiting for snow and instead get this rainy/ciy stuff that is not good for making snowmen!

Growing up in Texas, I never understood what a white Christmas really was about. Now, living in Illinois, I am fully aware of white Christmases and winters... sometimes too much! Here are two of my favorite snowy shots...

Here are some of my best shots of the ice storm that hit us (in upstate NY) on Dec 12

the last one (with the gnarled tree in the center and the darkened shadows around the edges) is photoshopped but the others are not.

There's snow on the ground here, but I haven't had a chance to get outside in the frigid temps so here's one of my favorites from a few years back-

oh, i am loving this post. loving it because it is making me see the weather we have differently. cool thing about living in ohio is we have all four seasons in one week. it is insanity at its best.

Photographing the rain this year will get me through our seattle winter. Here are some snowflake shots I took last week (year!) at the beginning of our crazy unexpected snowstorm.

It's all gone now, so perfecting rain and cloud shots will have to do!

I loved looking through all the weather pics! I am especially envious of the warm sun pics. We went skiing last weekend and had fog...

Snow is by far my favorite type of weather to capture. This one happened by mistake. I was photographing the branch with snow on it when the wind picked up and blew the snow around just as I clicked.

I recently got a little weather in my pictures. I wasn't very happy with them... it was getting dark, and I have a simple digital camera. Yet, it was still a beautiful experience to witness the first snow of the winter in Central Park, NYC.

This "weather" is actually from a mist machine at the summer fair. But I love how I can see droplets in the air and on my daughter's hair & face: http://www.flickr.com/photos/megbeverly/2769424974/

I caught it snowing in the first picture. I was quite pleased with it. But I think my favorites are the laurel leaf and rosemary covered in ice.

We moved to New York from Dallas almost a year ago. It is my first time really being able to see the seasons change and it has been wonderful. For Thanksgiving we rented a house in the Catskills and there was this wonderful pond that was frozen with ice. I can't tell you how much fun I had photographing in the woods.

Such a great photo!!!

I have several leaves in ice shots from Keystone, Colorado that remind me of Colorado winter - where it's a mix of autumn leaves and ice on a riverbank.

And I used one of the shots here for my SS giveaway. :)

Well, I couldn't not post snow pictures as it's the only kind of weather we've had here for almost a month now. Not that I'm complaining, I love the stuff.

How about MINUS 35!!

I am late coming to catch up on Shutter Sisters so you may no longer be looking at responses. Not knowing you had put the call out, the weather was on my mind and I took photos of minus 35 here:

Capturing the rain in Ghana was important to me as it was a big part of my visit there. Here are 2 of the shots I got, one of Jemimah waiting for the rain to stop so she could get back to her work and the other of Theophilus having fun running around in the rain with a clever cover.

I'm rather certain that one of the good ways to truly capture the essence of a downpour of rain or snow is to use your flash. That is supposed to be how you catch the streaks and dots more so than without. Works for me!

http://aubreyplays.blogspot.com/2009/01/superhero-challenge-weather.html

As I read this challenge, my mind went:
OOOUUU. That sounds hard. Maybe I'll skip this one. Besides, there hasn't been any weather to capture really.

Wednsday morning. It was raining, and there were icicles on every tree as we drove to school.
"mom...the ice on the trees is sooo pretty"

Funny I was just thinking the exact same thing.
Maybe I'll just try.
Standing out in the cold rain I felt like a kid. Playing in the rain. My imaginary wonder woman boots pulled back on. I think it is so cool what the rain drops did. They look like little magic fairies, drops of Jupiter. But this last photo I took with the mossy branch and water drops, well I just love it. Magic does exist.

THANKS FOR A GREAT CHALLENGE!!
