inanimate

Nest offerings, untouched.

I blink once and they squirm. I blink again and they’re weeping, then again and they’re metaphor, then again and they’re a collection of minute particles and who’s to say they're not looking back at me?

It’s seven minutes to midnight. It’s acceptable to be either asleep or pushing an elephant of a deadline up the stairs but I’m here with you contemplating how it’s possible for yarn to hold a twist and saying isn’t that something, when you see a story where you might otherwise not?

And you might cock your head just that way, or furrow your brow and say yes, isn’t that something and you might smile and right there, you and me together have generated electricity, an addictive current as real and as humming as red.

I blink one more time and they’re twists that wait to be useful. A photo of the pact of readiness.

+++

This first Monday, show me something inanimate that speaks to you. Or perhaps suggest your local Shady Acres, or a stronger drink. Or a weaker one.

This violin. Very inanimated unless I pick it up. This violin has been mine since the 60s. So when I touch it I remember how it felt to be 13. How it felt to stand up in front of people and play my heart out. This violin has so many memorys attached to it. Its inanimate but its full of life. Thanks for this great subject =)

Our old record player, in morning light... it holds such possibility for filling our house with festive sounds, the backdrop for happy memories.

This gift from my husband reminds me that even if I start to forget who I am or who I want to be, my husband is always there to help me remember:

These sparkley Christmas decorations that I have not taken down yet. They speak to me with their beautiful colors and their round hopeful shapes.

I did a series of objects with the macro lens I borrowed from my son over the holidays. I so lust after a macro lens of my own... It gives you such a different perspective on things.

Interesting post. I don't usually think about inanimate objects when I am awake at midnight, but other things give me a lot of anxiety!

I love this lamp: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cjb_phodographer/2202361872/ especially in the evenings when the light is on and highlights the texture.

Paloma is my current favorite inanimate object. She accompanied me on a recent vacation and got up to all sorts of mischief.

On a trip to Italy this past summer, I was mesmerized by doors. I am not sure why... maybe because I was in a new land and doors, to me, represent opportunity or adventure. But here is one of my favorite doors I found in Cinque Terre, Italy on the side of a mountain. What could possibly be behind it?

This old Ford truck sitting in the weeds pulls me back to my childhood and reminds me of my father. He loves his vintage Ford trucks. For as long as I can remember he has been restoring them and loving them. I can instantly see and smell the grease that has permanently stained my father's hands and the pride he wears on his face every time someone comments on one of his "babies".

It's not so poetic as the yarn, but here's a picture of a copier and various inanimate objects at my son's music studio. I think musical instruments sings even when they aren't being played. Of course my son and his teacher don't count as inanimate:)

Oh, so many things... Mainly the things that were just left there. I am a bit of an order maniac, or just a very neat with my working and living environment. So, I just love when I dfind things that were left there, and I didn't notice them before. On one hand, they are releasing a bit of my organizing anxiety. On the other hand, I feel like they were speaking to me, telling me their story, or the story of something that happened.

It's funny how certain inanimate objects enter your world.
You grow to love them in a way. They become a fixed part of your life.
One glance and you can think of a thousand memories.

A day late I suppose...but it was nice to do anyway.
