Taking it to the Streets

I tend to be a solitary photographer, leaving my home with camera in hand as a kind of meditation, seeing what speaks to me as I observe my city. But on July 18th, I will join a gang of strangers to participate in Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual Worldwide Photo Walk.

Photographers across the globe are already eagerly signing up, so leap in and join the party. Come July 19th or so, we can meet back here and share our images from the day, comparing cities and views and perspectives on snapping photos next to strangers, some of whom may cross over into the category of new photo friends.

What do you say? Are you game? Tell us in comments in which city you’ve signed up to participate, and let’s see how wide we can spread the reach of Shutter Sisters to create a lovely palette of images. Last year participants created amazing photos. Let’s show what Shutter Sisters can do.

If your city’s walk is already full or there isn’t one scheduled close by, consider applying to be a leader. Be sure to come prepared with batteries fully charged and plenty of memory cards or film (yes, film!) Be bold, be different, have fun!

I'll be walking in Dunedin, FL. Being in Tampa, we have several walks to choose from and some are scheduled so we could do a few of them over the day. I wish I could afford a babysitter for the whole day!

Deadline to apply to be leader in June 18.

I signed up for Athens, GA several weeks ago. I missed out last year because I was too late. My husband and a friend of mine who is just starting in photography both signed up too. This is a first for all of us, and I am very excited.

For those of you outside of the USA, you can join too. This is WORLDWIDE!!!! Go check the website to find a city near you around the world. Also, if your city is full, keep checking back. They are adding new cities (and new groups in old cities) all of the time. Atlanta already has 3 or 4 groups. Keep checking. Also, you could always sign up to be a leader in your city.

Can't wait to see everyone's images.

I just looked up my town - Athens, GA - and the the group has already reached its full capacity. However, that is so close to my due date (I'm pregnant), I don't think I could keep up with the group anyway. I'm starting to wobble now! But I'll be sure to have my camera in hand that day and take lots of photos. This seems like so much fun. I'll definitely have to sign up next year.
I signed my intern and I up for the Portland - St Johns walk :)

I heard about this a few weeks ago and got really lucky that there was a scheduled city near me. I live in Yucca Valley which is a rural area so we don't get much out here. So I will be taking to the streets in Palm Desert, California. We have a 6am start time as the temperatures can easily exceed 120 degrees during the day. I am sure the early morning sunrise will provide for some awesome pictures. I can't wait to share and see what other Shutter Sisters captured during their walks.

Wishing you a scent-sational day!

I won't be able to attend, most unfortunately. I will be taking my granddaughter to a grandma/granddaughter lunch and then to see the live performance of The Lion King (in Edmonton). So, I'll miss the SK walk. There's always next year!

Even if there are no walks in your city/town, you can apply to lead one. Just head over to Scott Kelby's walk site!

Oh, and since it's kind of related, I wrote a blog post today about approaching & photographing strangers if anyone is intrested :)

I signed up for the second of a half-dozen or more walks in the Atlanta Metro area. If anyone will be in Atlanta, try to sign up for the Oakland Cemetery/Cabbagetown walk. You could spend hours in the cemetery alone getting great pictures.

I signed up for the walk for the 2nd year in Memphis, TN. Last year we were in Downtown (South Main area) and were able to hit the farmers mkt and several streets. http://www.flickr.com/photos/redbanks626/sets/72157606912977089/ This year we are in Midtown. For those that havent been its pretty great. We had everyone from kids to studio owners. Not one picture was the same even though we were all in the same place. Very cool.
