Superhero Photo Challenge: Mornings

By now many of you have seen the gorgeous book by Stephanie Congden Barnes and Maria Vettese called A Year of Mornings: 3,191 Miles Apart. It is gorgeous... and I haven't looked at mornings the same since opening it. Imagine that, a book that can alter the way you look at your life, every day. That is magic, and the power of great art.

Their collaboration began as a blog, each posting a photo from their morning, one in Portland, Oregon the other in Portland, Maine. The results are a collection of extraordinary diptychs, capturing a delicate, graceful and ordinary/extraordinary beauty.

In honor of this book, and to mornings, I offer a new challenge today.

Since most of my photos are of 'early mornings'...it's hard to pick just one. Here's an early morning flower peeking thru a stockade fence:

I'm not a morning person. I cling onto the night through to midday if I can - but a toddler makes that impossible! My little boy woke me up at 4am earlier this week, and I was surprisingly happy to be up that early, but only because of what I got to see:

i have been feeling a little bit stuck creatively, so thank you for the inspiration to shoot during hours that are outside of my normal time frame. usually i just pick a new space to shoot in, but a new time is a wonderful idea!

I am a morning person and I love the quiet of the morning, especially right before the sun comes out. When it does, the light is amazing.

Breakfast is all very well, but one does not live by bread alone. Essential morning reading…

I have two dogs who insist that I'm a morning person, happily playing and walking and jumping all over me between the hours of 5:00 a.m and 5:30 am, okay not hours but half-hour. It does allow me to capture the early morning light, which is simply divine.

3191 - A year of mornings and A year of evenings - is probably the main reason I started a photography blog to encourage myself to take more pictures of everyday life. It has also led me to discover so many other beautiful photoblogs....Yet I still don't take enough morning pics myself!...here are two I like...

I agree that mornings can be magical when you have a camera in hand and the motivation to get out of bed early. Recently, I was having a bout of insomnia. So instead of just lying there awake I decided to get out of bed, grab my camera gear and ventured in Joshua Tree National Park around 5 in the morning. The picture enclosed was one I took just as the sun was coming over the mountains.

Wishing you a scent-sational weekend!

The ladies of 3191 definitely inspired me to look at mornings, and the simple things, a little differently. i have a set on flickr of my Sunday AM breakfasts

Um. Good idea. I'm normally rushing about like a madwoman in the mornings. Perhaps I'll try and play tomorrow. Looking forward to Sunday morning!

A morning sunrise, captured driving down the highway in March. (I had to swear to my family that I would not take pictures while driving again.)

I love mornings, but haven't really "looked" at them before. This sounds like a new challenge I'm interested in exploring! I'm going to look at that book, as well.

I take so many pictures in the morning that I think I will have to put them in a special set. I think that you can see a few here:

I was SO inspired when I read your post that I not only went out and bought this book but I also started a blog with 30 other photography friends to do our own version of this! So, thank you shutter sisters for bringing a little inspiration into all of our lives!
