I spy

I don't want him to smile. Not like that. Not like HA HA CAMERA LOOK AT MY FUNNY FACE or OH ALRIGHT MOMMY BUT YOU OWE ME ANOTHER TOONIE. I want to catch him absorbed in something other than the act of having his picture taken, and so I skulk. My shutter tiptoes, hunting immersion. I want nothing else other than the moment of processing: taste. The love child of pink and red. Maraschino!

Today, show me photographer-as-skulk-artist. Show me what you peeked at.

If you've ever had a dog, you know that you can't make ANY kind of movement at all without the dog getting up, wagging his tail, seemingly thinking, "Hey, whaddaya doin? Any chance we can play ball? Maybe go for a walk? Hey, how 'bout a treat? Where ya goin? What's that? Oh, that looks fun..." It's like having a second shadow! So the only way I could get this shot of my little monster eating was to skulk in the hallway, settings all ready to go, and pop into the doorway now and again before she could realize Mom was playing some REALLY FUN GAME with that funny black box in the other room. :)

I have to sneak photos of my teens now. They either roll their eyes, hide, run away or make goofy faces. They were much more cooperative when they were small:)

This isn't from today, but still a skulking moment.

I can't imagine anything describing it better for a person who loves to photograph birds. Skulking, sneaking and creeping are part of my day to day existence when I go 'hunting' for my next subject.

This picture is one of my favorites for I felt like I was being allowed to witness something private and beautiful.

These are a few more from that same day;

I love everything about your photo. The depth of field, collude, subject. It is fabulous!

My husband is away for the winter working in Toronto while I man the home front. He has a third floor apartment and I go in on the weekends to see him. The squirrels race around the roof and I caught this guy skulking and peeking at me.

Love the term 'skulking'. Seems to me that everytime I'm out photographing the winter birds..I'm skulking around..careful not to wake or disturb:

I was babysitting for my little grandson last week - he's just starting to walk and explore - and he became interested in the shadows on the wall.

Doesn't matter how far away I am - my little sis catches me everytime, even when I don't want her to look at the camera. However, I love the expression on her face in this one and I was totally trying to sneak, believe it or not.

My camera on my lap, being stealthy. I caught her mid-twirl while the others in the background try to combat illness with distraction. http://www.flickr.com/photos/anngeedee/5463316443/

I found my little one in bed watching his brother play video games: http://www.flickr.com/photos/yarnattacks/4899730462/

when he heard the shutter click on the first image, he got super cheesy. while it's very cute, I really loved his natural facial expressions more!

What a wonderful photograph. I love the sparkle that was captured as well as the flattering crop and dof. I caught an image of "adventure" this week. I agree, if the kids know the camera is out, they are immediate comedians. Bunny ears are getting old. I have no choice but to skulk.

I love the cherry and his slightly startled expression that you caught him.

my oldest insists on making a gopher face whenever I point the camera at him -- he'll be 8 soon. needless to say, I don't have many shots of him. but my little ones have gotten used to the shutter click with my 365, so they are easier to skulk around. here's one from quiet time the other day

These days, I've been so busy with work I haven't peeked at too much (and my 365 Project is suffering for it). But a few months ago, I peeked at a sweet little girl enjoying her first ever birthday cake! http://bigmariolife.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Love your photo. I MUCH prefer the photos of children especially where they are NOT looking at the camera, especially with those silly "here's me posing" looks. This photo is what photos should be. I don't post photos of children on Flickr or my blog but do on my website. Can't give you a direct link because it's flash based so let's just say I love this and hope others will take photos like this too!

I have a lot of experience shooting my son when he's not looking or when he's too absorbed in what he's doing to notice me and the big black unblinking eye I carry around all the time. This was this weekend's:

"Skulking" is great! Such a cute picture you capture. I was just writing today that I have a terrible time getting a pic of my cat. My son too, but he's easier to sneak up on. This one was just lucky, I had the camera in my hand and the opportunity presented itself:

Just stunning. Stunning. I have, of late, strayed from making color images, and this photo is a stark reminder of the possibilities which I have been denying myself. Thank you.

I laughed when you told stories long ago of bribing your kids to allow pictures. I was even more of a novice then. Owen has caught on. He's expensive.
This one cost 2 mid afternoon cookies: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dontforgetthehorse/5411251089/ but the freckles are worth it.
This one I had to lie. He offered me a picture of his super awesome magnet man instead. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dontforgetthehorse/5449891724/in/photostream/

I liked this shot of a friend's baby because it looked like he was playing piano ... and his daddy does play. So it was a sweet capture.

Our daughter is rapidly approaching the age where she'll be leaving us to go to college. She will soon be an adult, on her own. Her hands betray her, however. When I look at them, I see my baby girl still.

I love to "skulk!" I believe that is when you truly capture the essence of the moment. Here is a link to a series I have been working on - every single one is in skulk mode :

I love the 'secret' sneaky snaps. They're the only kind I like of people.

Here is one I 'snuck' of my mum & brother having a hug ♥♥

I agree that it's hard to make a little boy stay and take a picture. But that's what makes this pictures special, when you capture the real moment.
when my sister's dog had puppies, she was very protective and also very exhausted. i tried not to disturb her and her puppy, so i often had to be sneaky to get in some shots. other times, i was perfectly welcome. here is what i got.
