up close

Meet Ben.

Some of you may 'know' my little boy already. We spend day and night together. My husband says we are joined at the hip.

He's the cutest little guy.... so gentle and loving... sweet and full of character. There's just so much to love about Ben.

Today I pulled out my macro lens... it's been awhile! I've missed it! As I was taking close-ups of all the pretty flowers in our yard, Ben was right there with me .... I just had to take his pic. His beautiful golden lashes make me swoon. I mean...seriously... are they not just the cutest?

Today,  get in a little 'closer' to something (or someone) you love and share with us. I'd love to see.

p.s. I'm running a little 'up-close give away' at the Café.  Stop by and share your up-close photos for a chance to win a few prizes......

love is in the details

When was the last time you got really close to something and found something completely unexpected?

Have you ever uploaded an image and something hits you that you had not noticed before?

Some delicious detail that made you smile.

Have you ever noticed that the inside of a sunflower is filled with amazing rows of the tiniest most perfect hearts?  Really really.

I remember taking these shots.  I felt a little like a bumble bee with my nose stuck right in there.  I wanted to capture those tiny hearts to remind me that there is so much to be found in the details... even love.

Let's all celebrate this month's One Word today and share some amazing detail you have found.

the details

As a new mom, the days and nights tend to blend together into a constant flow of diapers, feedings and laundry. I am one month into the job and am realizing that taking care of a newborn is a much bigger task than one can ever prepare for, but the bright spots are also much brighter than I could have hoped for. I am learning how important it is to capture the details of my baby boy during these days where my memory seems a little foggy. I don't want to forget the tiny toes, soft skin and perfect lips of my little one because he already seems to be growing so fast.

I'm enjoying every tiny part and piece of my little guy these days. What kind of details are you focused on in your life?

Lens Love

October. The magical month. It has been a year since my photography took a huge lunge forward, last October. I will love this month forever! and it is all because of two marvelous creatures: the 50mm/f1.4 lens and the 50mm/f2.5 compact macro lens.

I knew I was missing something in my photographs. Something in the way I was able -- or more precisely, not able -- to translate what I was seeing into tangible results. I see details. Little pieces of light or shape or texture that catch my eye and draw me in. but I wasn’t able to convey what I saw.

I saw it in other photographs. In food photography, still life photography, in magazines, on blogs. A serene beauty in having all but the smallest piece of the image softly out of focus. Shapes. Colors. Hints of information. Dreaminess.

If they can do it, why can’t I do it? What IS it?

You see, I used to be a photojournalist, and the pictures I made were all about spreading information. Not that photojournalists’ photos aren't artistic, they certainly can be. But the widest aperture I used as a photojournalist was f2.8.

Having put photography aside for many, many years, I returned with fresh perspective, less of a photojournalist's hat on.

One day, it just clicked. Ohhhhhhhh, I need to use an even wider aperture for even shallower depth of field.

So last October, I bought the 50mm/f1.4. Then in June, I bought the 50mm/f2.5 compact macro. And my photography, and therefore my life, hasn’t been the same since.

Now I use these two lenses almost exclusively. I’m still learning what aperture works well depending on the subject, angle, distance from subject, all that. Sometimes I don’t get the focus point where I want, or don’t have enough depth of field. Sometimes I even remember to bracket. But often, I’m able to show what I see in a way that feels right. Finally! And I love that with both of these lenses, there are often stunningly beautiful surprises in the image that I wasn’t able to see through the viewfinder.

It’s true what they say, that it's not the equipment, it's the photographer. But having the right gear can help a photographer express herself and show the world her unique viewpoint, what and how she sees. And we all know how it feels when we express ourselves just as we intended. Magic.

the magic of macro

Isn't that sweet? These bug friends are giving each other piggy back rides! Er...wait...a...second...

If I ever find myself in a photography rut, or need a break from shooting portraits I can always find inspiration by taking some macro shots. It's a nice change to focus on the tiny details in life whether they are beautiful, funny or strange (or a combination of all three!). Macro photography allows me to slow down and pay attention to my camera settings or composition a little more.

Today, show us how you get up close and personal in your images. Express yourself!

...........

And in the spirit of self-expression, we're giving away another copy of our new book Expressive Photography: a Shutter Sisters Guide to Shooting from the Heart. Just leave your comment here between now and Sunday at midnight EST for your chance to win!

Updated to add: YAY Cindy! You won the book! Woot!
