the world according to mom

A few weeks ago Her Bad Mother launched The World According To Mom, a 'round the world in 80 clicks tour where mothers from all over the world write and share five things they love about being a mom. I was delighted to find out that some moms/bloggers decided to share photos instead of words and that, although our answers differ, we are all able to look beyond fusses and messes and see beauty in the smallest moments, in the most ordinary places.

So today I want you to share images of the things you love about being a mom (and if you are not a mom, share images of the things that you love about your own mother, or about motherhood).

the gift of change

I had no idea how much my children would change my life. Of course, I knew things were going to be different but what surprised me is how deeply and profoundly I have been changed. The “old me” is still here. She is just much brighter, stronger and more generous than she ever was before.

Life changing experiences happen to everyone in all different ways, not just having children. Kids were the perfect change for me though. I was always pretty self-sufficient (translation: a little stoic and protected). What my children did for me was to show me how vulnerable I could really be. They forced me out of myself and that vulnerability opened me up in so many other ways. One of the surprising ways was with my photography.

I started taking photographs when I was in the tenth grade. It was love at first click I guess you could say. I never really photographed people though until I turned my lens onto my babies. That little turn of the lens completely changed the path of my life.

Now I photograph babies, families and bellies everyday. I get to witness the change that I experienced over and over again as it happens to the families that I photograph. Not only that, I sing out loud to my kids and have become adept at making all sorts of silly noises. I get teary at lots of little things and I reserve judgment just a little more. My heart is softer all the way around.

The short of it...I see spirit so much more clearly now. I see mine, as well as others, and it has been the greatest gift that I have ever been given.

What have you seen through your lens that has changed your heart? I hope that you will share some images from your heart and of your gifts with us today.

magic pony

Some days it's a Llego severing my ankle. Other days it's a mountain of clean clothes on her floor "because she couldn't find the right shirt". You know the one. It used to be purple, but has faded to lavender. And that might be okay if it didn't show her entire belly when she raises her hands. She doesn't care. She needs it because it goes with her polar bear pants. And this ritual might be half way cute, if I didn't know this is only the first of twelve times that she'll be changing. Today.

Then there was the Insta-Gone camera. Ever heard of that model? We bought it for my son last year at Christmas. It was going to be his first real digital camera. We made him open it last. I had dreams and visions of all our picture-taking bonding that about to happen. And I think he held it once before it disappeared into The Abyss. The same Abyss which stores about nine pairs of his glasses. Okay, maybe eight. We did find that one pair on the outdoor playset. There they were, just sitting at the bottom of the slide. Had been there for weeks.

The chaos of three children can be like living in a hurricane. And somedays, I definitely feel like I'm hanging onto a tree limb. And just when you think you're about to blow away, you find something like this. She said she was giving her a bath in the Magical Waterfall Universe. And I couldn't help but picture her three year old little self. Carrying the stool over, I know she was still on her little piggy tip toes, as she washed pony's hair. All by herself, amused and entertained by just her sweet imagination.

And that made me think about the day when all the shoes are always put away. Finally, I'll be able to find scissors and the remote. No one will be stealing my makeup or paintbrushes. But I won't have magical ponies playing in my sink, either. Let's not wish anything away today.

What kind of magic is happening in your world?

exchange

One of my "kid tricks" at photo shoots is to bribe them by letting them take some of the pictures. I've found that it keeps them interested in the process, and sometimes distracts them out of a tantrum. In this case, Olivia wasn't throwing a tantrum. She was just one of those kids who has a natural curiousity about everything. She asked me if she could take a few pictures of her mom and dad. Of course I said yes, and this is what she snapped! Easily one of the best shots of the day! I love her perspective, and the cropping. But my favorite part are the expressions on mom and dad's faces: just completely unguarded, and encouraging their little girl. It showed me that by handing the camera over to someone else, not only do we get to see how they see. We also get to see how they are seen. The whole process is such a mutual exchange.

Wouldn't you agree? We'd love to see what you have to share today.
