light hunting

Portland winter rolls around and it's not the cold and rain that do me in. It's the lack of light. Most days, I look out my window around 4:30 in the afternoon and it's already dark. Nothing to do but sigh. Sigh heavily. But I've spent too much time lamenting the lack of buttery natural light here. I've decided to turn things around this year. To look for light in darkness, to crank up my ISO and keep my mind open. True, twinkly lights are everywhere right now but the real challenge will come in the long winter months that follow December. But I'm ready. I'm armed and I'm ready. How about you?

Light in darkness, Have you found any lately? Please share an image with us here today.

The darkness is the hardest (and longest) part of winter. It's all about finding the light (in one way or another):

I so know how you feel. I tend to get a bit down and depressed during those long and dark winter times. But just like you, this year I decided to not let it get me down. I am going to search for the fun, the pretty, the smile and the twinkle. Dance to the music in my mind. And the best thing is: we know spring will arrive again. It always does :)

In San Francisco's bay area, there is Christmas Tree Lane (Alameda). Long, happy sigh!

What an amazing shot! I love it. Here is my December twilight...

I don't often shoot landscapes, but this light begged me to stop and capture it as I was on my way to take my photo class out on a night time field trip last month.

I love the night, the absence of light that makes all the other muted and forgotten light stand out to us.

I have been feeling the same way. I am insecure about shooting in darkness. . . it tends to make me sad. I'm still giving it a try though. Thank you for not making me feel so alone!

LOVE this shot.

mostly I dread leaving to work when it's dark and coming home when it's dark - so, this time of year, I make it a point to get out at lunch time. . . one good thing is that Austin has food trailers in just about every nook and all are cheerfully lit year-round.

love this shot! looks like such a fun spot to be... all year 'round! so whimsically lit, i'd leave those lights up long after the holidays have gone.

here is my recent seeking out of the night lit up...

What a cozy little trailer! I recently captured the horse-drawn Cinderella carriage that appears at local markets during the holiday season.

Love this little place! My daughter goes to CCHS and I pass it everyday - are you in Portland? This fog is driving me crazy! Every time I pass it I think my girls need a haircut and should take them here - so cute!
