making and creating

The wheel spins. A child's eyes grow wide with anticipation, a lilting voice unable to hide the excitement. Steady hands show him how it's done. How to make something from nothing. Art from air. Beauty from clay. Patterns traced with fingertips across my heart, this is the making and creating of a life shared.

This time of year we've got our hands cupped around short days and dark nights. (We've all been awaiting tomorrow's Solstice and the extra light it will bring us.) Is this a busy time of year for you? What are you making? Do you have your fingers pressed to the pulse of the season? Show us what you've got going on in your life and something you have created this season.

Light, and sometimes the absence of it, is what winter is all about. Thanks!

I can't wait for more light - curse this tilted planet! The darkness does foster a creative spirit in me though, so that's good.

I've been enjoying creating cool shapes with bokeh (taking advantage of ALL the fairy lights around at the moment) - I even did a little tutorial on my blog... http://www.angiemuldowney.co.uk/2011/12/shaped-bokeh/

We love having Art Days with our good friends. This month, we worked on signs together. My daughter and I created this one:

We didn't make this ornament but wish we had!

Pulled out an old craftbox several weeks ago, removed yarn, wooden beads, pipecleaners and wool felt to begin crafting.
My husband finally asked 'What are you doing..." and I laughed as I explained I was making "Halfpenny Dolls, or pocket dolls'

My 16 y.o. boy came upstairs and said with a joyful smile ' these were my favorites when I was little..."

They now adorn each Christmas gift, holding the receiver names in their small hands.

I got the best Christmas present this week - a handmade quilt from my mom!

And we have sent out our handmade gifts too - cards with my photographs and mosaic candle holders made by my husband. Those are my favorite gifts.

In the darkness, under cover, I created a new photography class.

It's something that I've neglected to do for some time, and it's something I needed to do, so if feels good to have created this. I am excited to teach it, and I already am getting interest from people who want to take the course.

And, my daily self portraits.

What a lovely image. I love creating with our little ones. Those are such special moments.

We are having an extremely busy time this week, with all the preperations for Christmas and all the things organized at schools and groups for our children. Sometimes I am especially glad to just sit for a while. And dream a little...

We're all about tot crafts around here -- and then figuring how to photograph the action for my blog without disrupting my child's absorption. This is one that appeals to all ages...including mamas. Liquid stained glass window! http://journeyleaf.typepad.com/journeyleaf/2011/12/paint-in-a-bag.html

Today I spent time with my mom, babysitting my little nephew, who has discovered the deliciousness of yogurt.
